Tips on Moving to a New Home with Children

  Wednesday, Aug 24, 2022

It can be stressful buying a home, especially when children are involved. Young children can be especially overwhelmed by excitement and anticipation. By planning ahead you can help make the experience go smoothly. Here are 5 tips to make the move go smoothly.

  1. Familiarize Your Kids with the New Home

Have a walkthrough of a home with your kids. During the walkthrough, speak positively with them about the home. Ask what colour they would like their rooms to be painted and how they imagine their rooms will look like.

  1. Packing Up and Moving

Moves are the perfect opportunity to purge some of your excess possessions. Help your kids sort their books, toys, and games before they begin packing. Introduce them to the idea of donating their old items to a charity or organize a garage sale as a project for the family.

Have a special box for your kids on moving day that contains some things they hold dear. Let them know their things are safe and they can unpack their box themselves.

Before leaving, maybe let the kids say a few great memories they had there. Take some photos to remember the old home. On moving day it can be relieving to have a friend or babysitter take care of the kids while you move.

  1. Keep Contact with Friends

Moving often means leaving friends behind, which can be hard on children. Ask your kids if they'd like to stay in touch via phone calls, sleepovers or letters. If your kids are older they may already be able to chat with their friends online to keep in touch.

  1. Make the First Night a Fun One

Plan to make the first night at the new home memorable and fun. Order a pizza or your kids' favourite foods and maybe play some board games and watch a movie. Anything that's fun and interesting is good.

  1. Think About Routines

Children feel safe when they have regular routines. Bath time, bedtime stories, specific snacks or meals all should be continued as scheduled. Explore your new neighbourhood on foot, vehicle or Google Maps and check for parks, nature areas or playgrounds nearby. Invite your old friends and new neighbours to a housewarming party. Let the kids help you out with invitations, food and games for the kids. Make sure to check out the local businesses, restaurants and cool kid-friendly spots.
